December 2019
Dear Friend,
If you are reading this letter, you have what we call a “big HART”! At some point along the way, you helped make a big difference in a cat's life, and for that we are eternally grateful. Our mission is to ensure that each cat is loved, cared for, and placed into a loving home. Our community grows stronger every year because cat lovers like you choose to volunteer, foster, adopt, or support our program with a generous donation.

Largely run, managed, and organized by volunteers, HART thrives because of “big HARTs” like yourself! This holiday season, we hope you will consider contributing to our “BIG HART” campaign. For the second year in a row, a group of generous HART supporters will match all donations up to $30,000 — so your donation will be doubled! Every dollar donated goes straight to the care and well-being of the cats in our shelter.

Your donation will help kittens like Rory, who was rescued from imminent euthanasia and placed in the loving care of our most experienced foster home for kittens with neurological or orthopedic issues. Thanks to their patience and care, Rory has started to take his first steps! Or Hoss, who was found abandoned in a barn with foot injuries and a heart condition. He stayed with a HART volunteer and became her constant companion — even during her veterinary clinic shifts, where veterinary students learned by studying Hoss and his condition. And Burt, originally known as “Big Hurt”, is an Instagram sensation known for his elusive nature. He has since tamed his wild ways and is happily living in Cape Elizabeth with his new family. Or Tommy, a stray Maine Coon mix brought to us from a rescue partner in Massachusetts. FIV positive, diabetic, and timid, Tommy's prognosis looked grim. But with a special diet and insulin injections, Tommy has become a gentle and beloved favorite of the shelter.

Please donate by December 31st to grow your HART donation two sizes and make this a purrfect holiday for rescue cats in need!

Wishing you and yours a warm and wonderful winter holiday,

YOU CAN ALSO HELP BY…

  • Donating your old car, truck, boat or RV to HART!  No hassle for you, most often you receive a tax deduction, and it benefits HART!  See Cars for Kitties for details.

  • Anyone who must take a "Required Minimum Distribution" ("RMD") from your IRA, did you know you can have it sent directly to a qualified charity and possibly enjoy a tax benefit e

  • ven if you don't itemize deductions?  According to the IRS, "a "qualified charitable distribution" ("QCD") is an otherwise taxable distribution from an IRA (other than an ongoing SEP or SIMPLE IRA) owned by an individual who is age 70½ or over that is paid directly from the IRA to a qualified charity." A "QCD" is excluded from your taxable income on your personal tax return. There are certain requirements and dollar limits.  Most RMDs must be paid out of the IRA before year end, so if you wish to see if you can benefit HART in this manner and save some tax dollars at the same time, please discuss this with your accountant or tax preparer soon.  This could be a win/win for both HART and you!  Thank you!
