  • Homeless Animal Rescue Team of Maine, Inc, is a 501(c)3 nonprofit cat shelter and adoption center. We provide refuge, comfort, and comprehensive medical attention for all cats that have been surrendered, abandoned, injured, or abused–and find appropriate community placements for them.

    We are in search of a Shelter Manager to become a part of the HART of Maine family. The Shelter Manager will act as the primary contact for HART of Maine ("Shelter") staff and volunteers across all levels.

    Responsibilities:

    Facilities & Shelter Management

    • Ensure the shelter operates under a humane philosophy and provide accurate information to the public.

    • Oversee and manage facility maintenance and upkeep, including ensuring the facility is safe for cats and volunteers.

    • Regularly inspect shelter property for needed repairs and coordinate necessary work.

    • Assist in developing, implementing, and monitoring operational procedures for staff and volunteers.

    • Manage the adoption process., ensuring applications are reviewed, and decisions are communicated within two business days.

    • Maintain appropriate documentation of daily operations, including all necessary paperwork to maintain applicable licenses and certifications as required by local, state, or federal agencies.

    • Elevate safety concerns to the board and enforce basic rules for shelter safety among our staff, volunteers, and visitors.

    • Coordinate with other shelters, rescues, animal behaviorists, and trainers as needed.


    People Management & Recruitment

    • Supervise one administrative staff person, and partner with one medical staff person.

    • Manage our volunteer program, including all communications, scheduling, training, recruitment, and supervision.

    • Administer performance management, employee relations, reporting, record-keeping, prioritizing, scheduling, and assigning work.

    • Evaluate the need to fill vacant staff positions and recommend changes to allocated positions and structure.


    Budget Management & Operations

    · Ensure “Shelter Manager” software and paper records are current at least monthly.

    · Oversee supplies procurement process and monitor spending alignment with the organization’s budget.

    · Manage inventory of necessary supplies, working with the Medical Manager when responsibilities overlap.


    Community Engagement & Public Relations

    • Represent HART to the public and media and maintain our positive reputation among the community.

    • Coordinate, and conduct when appropriate, tours of the shelter to stakeholders, donors, and the public.

    • Utilize donor software for donor database management (Bloomerang) with consistency and accuracy.

    • Develop working relationships with Animal Control, local veterinarians, foster families, law enforcement, and other stakeholders.


    Board Support

    • Provide in-person and written reports to the board regarding shelter operations, finance, budgets, etc.

    • Attend monthly board meetings to provide updates on shelter operations.

    • Perform other duties as assigned by the Board President and Vice President.

    Required Knowledge:

    • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, codes, ordinances, policies, and procedures relevant to animal shelters.

    • Knowledge of safety regulations related to effective animal care and shelter operations.

    • Knowledge of leadership techniques for assigning work, scheduling, supervising, training, and evaluating staff.

    • Knowledge of customer service principles and processes.

    Required Skills and Abilities:

    • Computer and software skills for word processing, spreadsheets, and related software (e.g. Microsoft Office, Google Drive).

    • Judgment/decision making skills for establishing priorities and resolving complex matters.

    • Interpersonal relationship skills for developing and maintaining cooperative and professional relationships.

    • Compassion for animals and kindness toward them, their helpers, fosters, and potential owners.

    • Physical stamina for moderately demanding physical work.

    • Excellent oral and written communication abilities.

    • Financial management abilities for performing purchasing and financial transactions.

    Education and Experience:

    • Bachelor’s Degree with coursework in animal care, biology, business, or a related field.

    • 5+ years of experience in animal shelter operations or a related field.

    • 2+ years of supervisory and administrative experience, or equivalent education and experience.

    • Familiarity with The Guidelines for Standards of Care in Animal Shelters is a plus.

    • Proficient in companion animal behavior.

    Physical Demands

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is frequently required to sit; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds while utilizing the proper tools and seeking assistance from other facilities staff or volunteers. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision. Ability to travel and drive to external locations in a personal vehicle. Very active and fast paced. May require long days. This position can be exposed to high levels of stress. Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions and will involve intense exposure to cats.

    Additional Requirements:

    • Pass a background check.

    • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.

    • Must love cats.

  • Homeless Animal Rescue Team of Maine (HART) is seeking a per diem Licensed Veterinary technician or experienced Veterinary Assistant to cover our medical manager’s vacation and time off. We are an all-cat shelter, located in Cumberland Maine. The ideal candidate will be able to focus on our cats in a busy atmosphere, be able to work with a variety of cat personalities and behaviors, have experience with administering medication, and would be able to assess the health of a cat. The candidate must also be able to answer basic medical questions that arise and are submitted by our operation team and foster teams.

    We are looking for someone to cover 4 to 6 weeks of vacation (time varies). The candidate would be responsible to cover any medication shift (giving meds to the cats) that are not covered by volunteers, being on call to answer any medical questions, and/or coming into the shelter to assess any cats with medical concerns. Typical Shifts would be 6:30am to 10:30am 2 to 4 days a week.  Notification for coverage would be at least 4 weeks in advance.

    Pay is competitive for veterinary staff per diem shifts.
