Specialized Volunteer Opportunities

Along with our In Shelter, Adoption and Development Committee volunteer opportunities, HART has specialized volunteer needs. Some opportunities require previous experience, but most require simply dedication and a willingness to learn.

INTAKE COORDINATOR

Our goal is to save as many cats as possible. Our Intake Coordinator works with our Operations Director, Medical Manager, cat owners, and rescue organizations, both in and out of the state of Maine, to accomplish this important goal.

MEDICAL TECHNICIANS

We all see the videos of homeless cats and wish we could help all cats have a wonderful life.  HART (Homeless Animal Rescue Team) in Cumberland is looking for volunteers to serve in the volunteer role of Medication Technician. In this role you can be a part of the solution and have a meaningful impact on the lives of homeless cats and help them find a new and loving home. Learn more here. VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR

We are looking for an individual who is interested in helping us grow our volunteer base and continue supporting our mission. This position ensures we have the appropriate number of people to fill our many volunteer opportunities and works with the Operations Director and other departments to determine this need. This person also will coordinate with our Development Committee on recruiting campaigns and will also communicate with our volunteers regularly.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS

The Homeless Animal Rescue Team (HART) of Maine seeks volunteer Board of Director Members to join our dynamic and unique organization. This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual who is passionate about HART’s mission and who has a track record of board leadership. Selected Board Members will have achieved leadership stature in business, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector. The general expectations of all Board Members are as follows:

  • Regularly attends board monthly meetings and important related meetings or events

  • Makes serious commitment to participate actively in committee work and serve a three-year term

  • Volunteers for and willingly accepts assignments and completes them thoroughly and on time

  • Stays informed about committee matters, prepare themselves well for meetings, and review and comment on minutes and reports

  • Gets to know other committee members and builds a collegial working relationship that contributes to consensus

  • Is willing to make a personal donation within their means, and participate in fundraising for the organization

Service on HART’s Board of Directors is without remuneration, except for administrative support, travel, and accommodation costs in relation to Board Members’ duties.

HART is currently recruiting new members to join our Board of Directors who possess the following skill sets:

  • Ideal candidates for our Board Member with Accounting/Finance Focus will further have the following qualifications:

    • Assures that the organization is following appropriate financial policies and that qualified staff or consultants perform financial functions

    • Understands regulatory and legal requirements for financial accounting and standards of practice for nonprofit organizations

    • Provides monthly reporting to the Board of Directors

    • Maintain knowledge of the organization and personal commitment to its goals and objectives

    • Review the annual audit, as required by law, and answer board members' questions about the audit

    • Assist the Executive Director in preparing the annual budget and presenting the budget to the board for approval

  • Ideal candidates for our Board Member with Facilities Focus will further have the following qualifications:

    • Possesses a solid understanding of building systems such as HVAC, plumbing, electrical and mechanical including design, maintenance, and repair

    • At least 3 - 5 years experience in a facilities management or director position

    • Chair a committee that oversees the development of short and long-range maintenance plans/programs (e.g. emergency response plans, energy management plans, annual budget, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that shelter resources are effectively utilized

    • Oversees and works with others (Executive Director, board members, and others) ) on the long-term plans for the shelter, including expansion of the current facility

    • Assumes a leadership role in budgeting and establishing and managing contracts for facilities work

    • Ensures that the shelter is functioning within the established city, state, and federal codes

  • Ideal candidates for our Board Member with Grant Writing/Development Focus will further have the following qualifications:

    • Have prior grant writing experience, with proven ability to secure grants to raise money to support operations, capital expenses, events and programs

    • Ability to work with a team

    • Oversee all aspects of the grant writing process, which may include: preparing budgets, timelines, grant narratives, and progress reports as needed

    • Develop and write grant proposals to foundations, corporations, private donors, and other donors

    • Persuasively communicate the organization’s mission and programs to potential funders

    • Identify and track grant opportunities; monitor and control the grant application process to ensure all deadlines are met

    • Prioritize to keep multiple projects moving in a timely manner, meet deadlines and manage supplemental material required for proposals, such as progress reports and budgets

  • Ideal candidates for our Board Member with Human Resources Focus will further have the following qualifications:

    • Experience with developing Job descriptions / Compensation packages

    • Experience with creating Personnel Policies/Employee Manual

    • Ability to understand and implement Salary Scales/Salary Scale Compliance

    • Experience with other HR related functions including, but not limited to: Diversity, Grievances, Layoffs / Terminations

    • Willingness and ability to serve as a Committee Chair

  • Ideal candidates for our Board Member with Veterinary Medicine Focus will further have the following qualifications:

    • Possession of a veterinary license and willingness to continually meet licensing requirements

    • At least 1 year of veterinary experience in a clinic or animal hospital environment

    • Interest in Shelter Medicine in a professional or volunteer setting

    • Team building skills and collaboration, to support HART’s Medical Director (volunteer staff)

    • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a passion for improving the lives of animals

    • No conflicts of interest between HART and other endeavors (e.g. working for a Vet who provides paid services to HART)
